Therapy vs. Mental Health Coaching (which is for you).

What Therapy Entails

  • Focus: Emotional healing, mental health conditions (like anxiety and depression), and trauma.

  • Approach: Past-oriented, identifying the root causes of current distress and providing treatment.

  • Provider: A licensed mental health professional (therapist, psychologist) with extensive training and clinical experience.

  • Regulation: Highly regulated with strict ethical guidelines and licensing requirements. Does not cross state lines.

  • When to choose: When you need to heal, cope with a mental health concern, or recover from emotional pain.

What Mental Health Coaching Entails

  • Focus on Present and Future: Coaching concentrates on where you are now and where you want to go, helping you design action plans to achieve your goals.

  • Goal Setting & Accountability: Coaches help you set realistic goals and hold you accountable for taking the necessary steps.

  • Skill-Building: You'll learn practical tools, coping strategies, and techniques to manage stress, anxiety, and other life challenges.

  • Empowerment & Strengths: Coaches guide you to uncover your internal strengths and resources to create lasting, healthy changes.

  • Evidence-Based Principles: Coaching often uses principles from evidence-based therapies, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help you change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

Key Differences

  • Role of the Professional: Therapists diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Coaches do not.

  • Scope of Practice: Therapists address past trauma and deep-seated emotional issues to foster insight and self-awareness. Coaches focus on present-day challenges and future-oriented goals.

  • Credentials: Therapists require a master's degree and state licensure. Coaches typically have specific certifications or a master's degree in a related field.

Can They Overlap?

Yes, some professionals are trained in both approaches and may offer a hybrid model. A therapist can provide coaching services, and some coaches may have therapy training. In some cases, wellness coaching can serve as a supplement to therapy.

Can They Work Together?

Yes, coaching and counseling are complementary and can work together effectively. A counselor can address deep-seated emotional issues or mental health conditions, while a coach can help the client implement new behaviors and routines to support their recovery and goal achievement.
